2023 ANNUAL REPORT from JAPAN PATENT OFFICE

The JPO published its 2023 Annual Report in July this year. The 2023 Annual Report provides various data for IP related applications filed in Japan and filed from Japan in foreign countries, and the examination situations thereof during the period of 2022 and recent years.

According to the announcement from the JPO on August 7, 2023 through its website, the key contents of the report are as follows:

“- The number of patent applications increased slightly for the second year in a row.

– Regarding patent applications from abroad, the number of applications from the United States, Europe, China, and Korea increased from the previous year.

– For trademarks, the average FA (First Action) pendency, and the total pendency, from the filing to the registration, were both shortened dramatically.”
