Status of Suspension on Intellectual Property Infringing Goods at Customs in 2022

The Ministry of Finance has announced the status of suspension on counterfeit brand goods and other IP infringing goods at customs in Japan. According to the announcement, the number of import suspension cases was 26,942 in 2022, which was a decrease of 4.7% from the previous year, while the number exceeded 25,000 for three consecutive years.

On the other hand, the number of suspended goods was 882,647 in 2022, which was an increase of 7.7% from the previous year. There was a significant increase in the number especially for goods that pose a risk to health and safety through use or ingestion, such as pharmaceuticals, household products, electrical products, cigarette and smoking implements, etc.
